A Taste of Mule Camp

Part I

At the Marauders' August shoot, those of us who haven't had the opportunity or inclination to participate in the Shoot-Out At Mule Camp got a little taste of what the stages were like.  The Shoot-Out At Mule Camp, conducted annually by the Cherokee Cowboys on Memorial Day Week-End in Gainesville, GA, is the largest SASS Regional Shoot east of the Mississippi River.  Ole T- Bone gave us that experience by usin' 5 of the Mule Camp scenarios for our August shoot.  The Mule Camp theme this year was centered on John Wayne movies, and the Marauders shot stages based on THE COWBOYS, THE SHOOTIST, ANGEL & THE BADMAN, BIG JAKE, and ELDORADO.

But August was only part of the dish, as a chuck wagon cook would say.  In September, we'll shoot Part II of the Taste Of Mule Camp.  If you missed Part I, you missed a real good shoot.  Don't miss Part II! It'll be a Daisy.

(Tellico)  Ole Tellico has been a SASS Cowboy Action Shooter longer than most of us in the club.  His Sass No. is 3,482.  When Cooter formed the Tennessee Mountain Marauders, Tellico was one of the early members.

(Tennessee Jake)  Ole Jake has been a long time Marauder.  He too was an early member of the Marauders, back when we thought we had a crowd when 20 shooters showed up for a Saturday shoot.  Back then, we only had 2 bays to shoot our 4 stages, and we could set up on the morning of the shoot.

Turn out in August was good. 59 cowboys & cowgirls strapped on shootin' arms and played the game.  And as normal, we had several non- shootin' members and visitors who came to watch and enjoy the event.  Ole Moose was there.  He's recuperating from surgery and couldn't shoot.  Sundance recently had surgery, and he couldn't be with us.  Mamma Moose is also ailin'.  Moose told us that she's been in the hospital for a pretty serious condition.  We wish her and Sundance speedy recoveries so they can rejoin us.

The match was fast movin', the targets close, and there was no reloadin' except for shootin' the shotgun.  So the action was fast, furious, and sometimes very smoky.  The fellers who shoot black powder in the Frontier Cartridge category make a different noise, a lot of smoke, and show us how it really looked when folks shot their guns in the real wild west.

Once again we heard from some of our visitors that we have a reputation in the region that we're a safe shootin' group that is friendly and conducts a fun shootPardners, that's a reputation we can all be proud of.  We concentrate on fun and friendliness, not nit-picky competition. Now that don't mean that we don't try to shoot good and fast. It just means that we practice the "Spirit Of The Game."

At the July Shoot, ole Tinker was overhead saying "I'm really having a ball.  This is great.  I'm not much good, but I'm having a ball.  That's the "Spirit Of The Game".
