Notes from the President!
- Thanksgiving
Shoot - Lots of discussion around the upcoming annual Thanksgiving shoot
on Saturday, 18 November. Menu
has been set. Cost will be
$10.00 per person and MDR is asking that people please let them know if
they are planning on eating, or bringing guests that will eat as soon as
possible to help with their planning.
We will shoot four fun stages and then we will sit down to eat.
The score sheets will be tabulated during the meal with awards
presented as soon as scores are tabulated.
Coffee Joe has volunteered his sound system again, which we truly
appreciate, so we will have some music during the shoot and the meal.

the horses from the range. We
will also be doing some maintenance on our stages, clearing fence lines,

-
Tennessee
Mountain
Marauders Christmas Shoot and Party –
Since all local clubs are backing up there shoots and parties, TMM decided
to do the same. The shoot and
party will be held on Saturday,
9 December at regular time.
It will be a short, three stage, fun shoot and will be open to all
shooters who would like to attend at no charge.
Immediately after the shoot, the TMM will move to their Christmas
party. Annual awards will be
presented. Each member will
bring an unwrapped $15 gift for our
gift swapping and a covered and/or side dish.
Location is to be determined, but it will more than likely be held
in the same place as last year. Each
member has been asked to solicit door prizes.
- Membership Fee Revision – There was a discussion and then a motion to
pro-rate our membership fees. When
new memberships are paid on July 1 a 50% discount will go into effect with
$2.00 off per month after that with a minimum membership fee of $10.00.
The motion was passed.
- Juniors and Buckaroos – It was voted upon and passed that Junior
shooters would shoot for $5.00 and Buckaroos would shoot for free, but
must be accompanied by a paying parent.
- Black Powder Night Shoot – There was a lot of enthusiasm about a black
powder night shoot of either one or two stages lighted by kerosene lamps
and campfires.
- Cops Versus Cowboys Fundraiser Shoot
–
Lot
of discussion about
how we can set up a fundraiser shoot between law enforcement and the
cowboys. Oracle and Cherokee
Maddog said they would put their heads together and see what they could
come up with.
- Hot Weather Shoots
-There was a discussion about shortening the hot weather shoots (June,
July, August) to four stages. It
was decided we would write and set up for no more than five stages, but if
the weather forecast calls for temperatures above 90 degrees, the shoot
will be shortened to three or four stages, depending upon the heat index.
- TMM Officers
- Short discussion about protecting the club and officers by either
incorporating the club or at least an LLC.
It was decided we would investigate what it would take to make this
happen. Cherokee Maddog and
Oracle will investigate and report back at next meeting.

I
spent All Hallow’s Eve with that Tennessee Mountain Marauder bunch out at
Mystery Dog Ranch. I ain’t much
one to believe in haunts, but let me tell you, after what I went through while
riding with that bunch on Saturday, my mind has been changed.
Seems like everywhere we went, all we ran into was ghostly figures who
was an aimin’ to take our earthly souls somewheres else.
It all started down a Boot Hill, with cobwebs a hangin’ everywhere and
them tombstones seemed to be a movin’ in the breeze.
Boot Hill ain’t a good place to be around in daylight, but when you
have to walk through right at dark on All Hallow’s Eve, it ain’t a good
place to be. As cowboys, we
don’t hold much truck with ghosts and such, but then again, there ain’t no
since in takin’ any chances either. We
was all a carryin’ all our long guns and our pistols was a loaded up as we
started through the gate. Good
thing we brought all your smoke wagons, because what we saw jump up made our
hair stand on end. We didn’t ask
too many questions, just went to blastin’.
That put us on the trail fer the third straight day without sleep, so
you can imagine when we happened into the little town of
Between
Here
and
There, we decided a little beverage to clear the throat, a little company and
a good nights sleep couldn’t hurt any of us.
So we all stepped down and go into the saloon, but something is wrong
because you can see plumb through everybody in the place.
The bartender called us over and asked if we was here for out last
drinks. When he said that, them
see through folks in the saloon started closin’ in.
We didn’t wait to see what was going to happen next.
We just went to shootin’ everything in sight.
We even knocked some of them goblins right out of the air.
Just
after
midnight
we was a just gettin’ back from
in from ridin’ night herd and we was a walkin’ between the barn and the
bunk house. Boy, was it dark.
The fact that it was All Hollow’s Eve didn’t make the walk any
easier. We decided that maybe
whistlin’ a little tune might help our nerves a little, so we all picked out
our favorite tune and start in a whistlin’.
Right between the barn and the bunk house, were it is the darkest, we
heard some sounds and see some nasty lookin’ thing movin’ towards us.
We didn’t wait to see what it was, this time of night.
We just started in a shootin’.
We had been out in the cold October rain all day and rode into the old
ghost town of Dry Gulch. Thinkin’
about nothin’ but a dry place to sleep, we all kicked saddle and walked our
horses into the deserted hotel. We
throwed out our bedrolls, started a fire in the old stove and lay out your
shootin’ irons so they could dry out. We
was just about ready to bed down when we heard some nasty sounds a comin’
from out back of the hotel. When
we looked out, we seen a bunch of ghostly miners, cowboys, and townsfolk, all
a comin’ towards us and they was a sayin’ something about how they was a
comin’ for us. Once we unloaded
them irons through the doors and windows, they wasn’t a comin’ fer no one
else.
About
noon
the next day, Miss Dixie Ree and cook
house crew showed up with the chuck wagon and prepared a feast for all the
hands. Grilled chicked and lamb
chops, beans, bread and all the fixin’s, including some peach cobbler.
It was hard to get back into the saddle after that meal, both because
we all needed a nap and it was hard to get them full bellies moving in one
direction with any conviction. That
chuck wagon crew at Mystery Dog Ranch really out did themselves, as always.
We
had been pushin’ the herd pretty hard and had been on the trail for a long,
long time when we come across a little old line shack in the middle of
nowhere. We decided it was a good
place to camp and once the herd was settled, we went inside and settled down
for the night. We was all kicked
back in chairs asleep, went we was woke up by one of the worst sounds I had
ever heard. I was somewhere
between a dyin’ rabbit and a ghostly coyote howl.
We jumped up to look out the windows and all we could see was a bunch
of ghostly white figures moving toward our little shack.
We all hollered out we weren’t afraid of no haunts, but we sent some
lead their way to make sure they got the point. .
What you see is ghostly figures moving toward your hideout.
We all finally made it back to the ranch only to find that a bunch of
hombres had stole some of our things from the bunk house, and more
importantly, a half dozen fresh pumpkin pies from the cook house.
We tracked them varmints through the garden to the lower end and we
found them sitting in the middle of the pumpkin patch, enjoying the pies and
countin’ the loot they lifted from our lockers and pokes.
Needless to say, them pies was their last meal.
At the end of the shootin’ I seen a lot of smiles and I figured many a
cowboy and cowgirl had a good day. I
don’t know how you could ask for much more than good friends riding
together, sharing big lies, great grub and reveling in the cowboy way.
There is some big goin’s on comin’ up our at Mystery Dog Ranch on
Saturday, 18 November as the Tennessee Mountain Marauders host their annual
Thanksgiving shoot and dinner. There
will be a short four stage shoot and then we will all settle in to put fork to
some of the finest vittles every to pass over your teeth.
If you are planning on coming out, please let Miss Dixie Ree know so we
can make sure we have enough vittles. If
you show up unannounced, you may not get to eat.
Pards, I hope to see you out at Mystery Dog Ranch in November and until
then, keep this great country in your thoughts, your powder dry and your
family close to your heart.
